Who is patanjali maharishi?

Patanjali Maharshi is known to be the embodiment of Anantha, the holy serpent. His parentage is unknown. He is also called as Gonardiya or Gonikaputra. There is a story behind the name of Gonikaputra. One day when Adi Shesha enchanted to watching the dance of Lord Shiva and he could impressed in the dance and pleased Lord Vishnu. He blessed to Adi Shesha to attain the blessings of Lord Shiva. Lord Shiva blessed him and says that Adi Shesha would take birth as human and he will be the master in the arts of dance. But that time, Gonika, a virtuous woman was praying to God for a son  with plenty of water in both hands.She was totally devoted to God for that. suddenly she saw a serpent moving in her hand and it turned to human. Adi Shesha was that serpent incarnated as patanjali. Patanjali Maharshi is known as the father of Yoga. Mahabhasya and Yoga sutra is written by Patanjali Maharshi. He started yoga sutra in a half sentence. He was the visible representation of Adi Shesha. Adi Shesha  learned the value and benefits of Yoga and decided to teach humans as Patanjali about the great art of Yoga. Yoga sutras includes 195 sutras. Teaching of patanjali stands in an eight fold path of Yoga and it will give the path to a peaceful life through yoga. Yoga was there in different forms and Patanjali Maharashi connected the forms into a system. Adiyogi transferred Yoga to Sapta Rishis or Seven sages. He had well known understanding of nature so he chose seven people to teach the different aspects of yoga. Atlast it became seven basic forms of yoga and now it divides into hundred of systems. Nevertheless Yoga has sustained the basic seven aspects. He was also a musician who composed a serious of music in any raga without using alphabets with horns. The five elements of nature were created as five lingas and Patanjali sanctified linga for space in Chidambaram. He was defined yoga as " Chitta Vritti Nirodha". It is believed that Patanjali's Jeeva Samadhi is in Tirupattur Brahmapureswara Temple.
